Gift of Frederick Karst
This jaunty fur hat – named after a favorite style of Empress Eugénie of France, (1826-1920) – was made by local milliner Miss A. L. McMahon, and bears her Art Deco-style label (the same as the hat box insignia). The hat was worn by Elsa Karst, who lived her entire life at 1215 Forest Avenue. Miss Karst taught English at New Trier High School.
Little is known of Miss McMahon, but local directories indicate that her shop had a presence in Wilmette at several locations for well over twenty years.
