Rock musicians of all types were made instant celebrities in the 1990s in large measure by MTV music videos. Their clothing often reflected a street-wise, rap artist, urban look, easy to duplicate. Its deconstructed nature makes it affordable to young people who can then easily emulate the favorite artist of the moment.

Along with musicians, sports activities and celebrities spawn styles worn by individuals who may or may not ever ride a skateboard or shoot a basketball. The pants are know as "shants" (short pants), and were initially favored by skateboarders. They are worn as low on the hips as possible, a style called "sagging." Shirts with logos, especially logos of music groups, are favored.
