American Legion, Huerter Post #46

Several months after the American Legion was organized in May, 1919, a small group of servicemen from Wilmette petitioned to charter a post, and this group became Wilmette Post No. 46. There were 77 men and 2 women as charter members. In April, 1921, a woman's auxillary was added, and this arm of the organization has been key in organizing poppy days and hospital visitations. In Gross Point, the Peter J. Huerter Post #669 was organized in 1920, named for the only Gross Point resident to die in World War I. The two posts were combined in 1972. The American Legion has contributed to numerous community activities and conducted an employment service for its members over the years.
