Wilmette Council of Civilian Defense

Following recommendations from the United States Government at the outbreak of World War II, the Village established the Council of Civilian Defense in December, 1941. David C. Leach was appointed the General Chairman and the Council was staffed by volunteers. Initial funds were raised by voluntary contributions, but after March, 1942, Council activities were supported by a highly successful salvage collection program. In 1946, the organization became inactive, and in 1959 it was formally dissolved with remaining funds officially transferred to the Wilmette Memorial Trust.
